Episode Overview
In the peaceful kingdom of Cathay, a humble kitchen maid cares for her ailing mother. She discovers tales of magical faeries and a miraculous root that can heal the gravest ailments. During her journey, she encounters a mesmerizing nightingale, whose enchanting song captivates her heart. Meanwhile, the emperor grows frustrated that the poets adore the nightingale instead of his grand palace. With the maid's assistance, the court captures the bird, delighting the emperor. However, when he receives a mechanical bird as a gift and banishes the nightingale, he soon falls gravely ill. Now, the fate of the emperor rests in the hands of the nightingale—will she choose to help him after being cast aside? Mick Jagger shines as the emperor, Barbara Hershey impresses as the kitchen maid, and Edward James Olmos delivers a strong performance as the prime minister.
