Buck Cannon takes on the role of foreman for a charming widow, Melanie Cawthorne, leading to tension with his brother John when it seems Buck's position might become long-term. As Buck develops feelings for Melanie, he unwittingly becomes her pawn in her quest for wealth and status. Meanwhile, as water becomes increasingly limited, she secretly purchases stolen cattle from Romero, keeping Buck in the dark about her dealings.
