Born on May 26, 1973, in Saint-Cloud, Clémentine Autain is a French politician and journalist who has made her mark on the left of the political spectrum. She has represented the 11th constituency of Seine-Saint-Denis in the National Assembly since 2017 as a member of La France Insoumise, and currently serves as a secretary in the Assembly’s Bureau.
Autain’s entry into politics came in 2001 when she was elected to the Council of Paris for the 17th arrondissement with the backing of the French Communist Party. She went on to serve as Deputy Mayor of Paris under Bertrand Delanoë, focusing on youth affairs, and helped establish the Conseils de la jeunesse de Paris. She also held a seat on the municipal council of Sevran from 2014. In regional politics, she has been a councillor for Île-de-France since 2021, stepping down from a previous term in 2017 to prioritize her work as an MP.
A committed feminist, Autain co-edits the monthly *Regards* and co-secretaries the Fondation Copernic, a think tank critical of neoliberalism. She holds a master’s degree in history, with research on colonial Algeria and the French women’s liberation movement. Among her 15 published works is the novel *Assemblées*.
Autain is the daughter of singer Yvan Dautin and actress Dominique Laffin, whose suicide in 1985 profoundly shaped her. She has two children, born in 2008 and 2010.
