Engin Çağlar (28 August 1940 – 1 November 2025) was a Turkish film actor whose career, though brief, left a lasting impression on Turkish cinema.
Born into a family with deep roots in migration—his mother hailed from Skopje, while his father’s lineage traced back to a coastal town on the Sea of Azov before settling in Istanbul—Çağlar grew up in a household where his father owned an industrial materials factory. He attended the prestigious Robert College for secondary school and briefly played football for Galatasaray in 1958. After studying at a university in Germany, he was conscripted into the military in 1965, serving as a sailor for two years, including a stint in Cyprus.
Following his discharge, Çağlar entered a competition organized by *Ses* magazine, finishing second behind Uğur Güçlü. The same competition featured future stars Kadir İnanır, Sümer Tilmaç, Demir Karahan, and Altan Bozkurt. He made his film debut in 1968 with Bilge Olgaç’s *Öksüz*, but his breakthrough came a year later when he starred alongside Hülya Koçyiğit in Orhan Aksoy’s *Kınalı Yapıncak*. After signing with Hulki Saner, he worked with acclaimed director Metin Erksan before stepping away from cinema in 1974. Though he appeared in a few later films, he never fully returned to acting. In 2016, he was elected chair of the board of directors of the FİLMSAN Foundation, cementing his legacy beyond the screen.
